Australian bank statement guides

CommBank, ANZ and Westpac each have a full guide, covering where the PDF is, how long statements are kept and what the bank's own exports offer.

  • CommBank statement to Excel guide: NetBank keeps online statements for up to 7 years, or 2 years after closing, and has replaced its OFX and QIF downloads with CSV.
  • ANZ statement to Excel guide: statements build up to seven years, and Internet Banking downloads transactions for open accounts over the last 2 years.
  • Westpac statement to Excel guide: statements go back up to 7 years, including closed accounts, and Exports and reports offers CSV, QBO, QIF and OFX.

What Australian bank statements have in common

Australian statements identify the account by BSB and account number, put the day first in dates and can be grouped by financial year.

Note the BSB and account number on each statement before converting. When you import into Xero or another accounting tool, they tell you which bank account the file belongs to.

Dates go day first, so 03/02/2026 is 3 February. Many rows show only 12 Mar, with no year, so the converter takes the year from the statement period and keeps a December to January statement in order. Debits and credits may be printed in two columns or one column with minus signs or CR; either way they end up as one amount column, with money out negative, and every printed running balance is added up again line by line.

CommBank's NetBank lets you pick statements by financial year and download several at once, according to its NetBank user guide. That suits a year of statements for a tax return.

All three banks offer some kind of transaction export. CommBank's feature changes page says OFX and QIF are no longer available and transactions export as CSV, ANZ offers CSV, and Westpac's export files page lists CSV, QBO, QIF and OFX. An export covers the dates you choose, though, and doesn't include the statement's balances. Converting the PDF gives you rows that match the statement, with each balance checked and any row that doesn't add up flagged.

Keeping statements for the ATO

The ATO explains which records you need for your tax return on its page keeping records for your tax return. Bank statements are the bank's own record of interest earned and money moving in and out, so keep them with your other tax records.

All three banks keep statements online for up to seven years, but access can shrink once an account closes; CommBank's drops to 2 years. Save the PDFs yourself, and keep the converted CSV alongside them for totals.

Australian bank statement questions

Can I convert a statement from an Australian bank that isn't listed?

Yes. The converter reads PDF statements from any bank, including NAB, credit unions and online banks without a guide here. Every guide we have is on the all bank guides page.

Will day-first dates come out right?

Yes. Australian statements are read day first, so 04/05 becomes 4 May. Check the first few rows against the PDF before importing a full financial year.

Should I use my bank's CSV export or convert the PDF?

The bank's export is fine for recent transactions in a date range you choose. Convert the PDF when you need rows that match a statement period, with its balances, or when the transactions are older than the export allows.

Can I import the file into Xero?

Yes. Xero imports the free CSV, and paid plans add OFX, QIF and QuickBooks (.qbo) files. Importing into Xero covers the steps.

How many pages can I convert for free?

You can convert 3 pages a day without an account, or 15 with a free account. If you aren't signed in, uploaded files are deleted after 24 hours.
