The bank statements for a mortgage application are usually your most recent statements for every current or checking account you use, plus statements for the savings that hold your deposit. How many months they ask for depends on the country and the lender: the US government's checklist says the two most recent, while the UK's MoneyHelper service says three to six months.

Quick answer: Download the latest full statements from your bank as PDFs, for every account the lender asks about, with no gaps between them. Expect to send two months in the US and three to six months in the UK. In Canada and Australia, ask your lender for its exact list. Never edit a statement.

What lenders ask for in each country

Every lender sets its own list, but official guidance in each country gives a starting point. The table shows what each regulator or government service says about bank statements for a mortgage application.

In the US, Fannie Mae publishes its rules for the mortgages it buys in its Selling Guide. For a purchase, the guide asks for statements covering the most recent full two-month period of account activity. If your latest statement is more than 45 days older than your application, the lender should ask for something more recent from the bank. If you bank with Chase, here's what lenders look for on a Chase statement.

In Canada, CMHC's guidance for borrowers also asks for your bank's contact details so the lender can check the statements. In the UK, MoneyHelper says that if a printout isn't accepted, you'll need hard copies or copies certified by your solicitor or bank.

What a lender looks for on the statements

Lenders check that the money for your deposit belongs to you and where it came from. Fannie Mae's guide says a statement must show the bank's name, you as the account holder, at least the last four digits of the account number, the period covered, every deposit and withdrawal, and the ending balance.

Large deposits get extra attention. Fannie Mae defines a large deposit as a single deposit of more than 50% of your total monthly qualifying income. On a purchase, the lender needs to document where that money came from, often with a written explanation from you. It doesn't need one when the statement already shows the source, such as payroll, a tax refund or a transfer between your own verified accounts.

How to get official statements from your bank

Download the statements from your bank's website or app as PDFs. A statement the bank issued is the version lenders expect; a screenshot or a list of recent transactions is not the same document.

  1. Sign in to online banking on a computer, where the full statement archive is usually easiest to reach.
  2. Open the statements or documents section and pick the right account. Repeat for every account the lender asks about, including savings.
  3. Save each month as a separate PDF and keep the file names clear, such as "checking-2026-08.pdf".
  4. If a statement is too old to download, or your lender wants paper or stamped copies, ask the bank to send them.

The exact menu path differs by bank. Our bank guides cover the steps for Chase (up to 7 years of statements online), Citi, Barclays, RBC and CommBank, and the full list of banks covers the US, UK, Canada and Australia.

Turning mortgage bank statements into a spreadsheet

Putting your statements into a spreadsheet lets you see what the lender will see before you send anything. With every transaction in one table, you can add up your income, total your monthly spending and spot any large deposit you'll need to explain.

Typing out three to six months of transactions by hand is slow and easy to get wrong. Our bank statement converter reads the PDF and gives you an Excel or CSV file with four columns: date, description, amount (money out as a negative number) and balance. It checks the running balance against the statement and flags any row that doesn't add up, so you know the spreadsheet matches the PDF.

Once you have the file, a few checks take minutes:

  • Filter the amount column for your salary or other regular income and confirm it matches your payslips.
  • Sort deposits from largest to smallest and write a short note on where each big one came from.
  • Total your regular outgoings, such as rent, loans and subscriptions, so the figures on your application match your statements.

Send the lender the original PDFs, not the spreadsheet. The spreadsheet is for your own checks or for your broker or accountant. You can convert 3 pages a day free without an account, or 15 with a free account, and files are deleted after 24 hours if you aren't signed in.

Common mistakes with mortgage statements

Statements that are incomplete, out of date or altered are the usual reasons a lender comes back with questions. Check for these before you send anything.

Missing pages

Send every page of every statement, including pages that look blank or only hold the bank's terms. A lender reviewing a statement with a page missing can't see every transaction and may ask for the full copy.

Wrong or incomplete date range

Lenders want your latest statements, back to back, with no missing month. If you apply in October with statements that end in July, expect a request for newer ones. Fannie Mae's 45-day rule in the US is one example of how lenders treat statements that are too old.

Leaving out an account

If your deposit sits in a savings account or moved between accounts, the lender will want statements for both ends of each transfer. Gather statements for every account named on your application.

Editing a statement

Never change a bank statement, even to hide a single transaction or fix a typo. In the UK, the FCA warns against brokers who offer false documents, and in Australia ASIC has banned and prosecuted brokers who gave lenders false information. If something on a statement needs context, explain it in a separate note.

Mortgage statement questions

How many months of bank statements do I need for a mortgage?

It depends on the country and the lender. The CFPB's checklist in the US lists the two most recent statements, and MoneyHelper in the UK says three to six months. Canadian and Australian lenders set their own number, so ask yours.

Can I send downloaded PDF statements instead of paper ones?

In the US, Fannie Mae accepts statements you download from your bank's website, as long as they show the bank's name and the required details. In the UK, MoneyHelper says printouts of online statements might not be accepted, so check with your lender before you send them.

Why does my lender ask about large deposits?

Lenders have to know where the money for your deposit came from, including whether any of it is borrowed. Under Fannie Mae's rules, a single deposit of more than half your monthly qualifying income needs its source documented on a purchase, unless the statement already shows where it came from.

Do I need statements for every account?

Lenders usually ask about every account that holds your income, savings or deposit. If money moved between accounts, include statements for both. Your lender's checklist is the final word on which accounts to send.

Can I give my lender a spreadsheet of my transactions?

No, lenders want the statements your bank issued. A spreadsheet is still useful for checking your own income and spending before you apply, and for questions from your broker.

Once you have all the bank statements for your mortgage application as PDFs, use the bank statement converter to check your income and deposits before you apply. If you also need statements for a tax return, see our guide to bank statements for taxes.
